Quello che la foto ritrae è tutto ciò che il nostro occhio avrebbe potuto facilmente e naturalmente osservare se, alle 23:20 del 2 luglio, ci fossimo trovati sulla spiaggia della baia di Caminia con lo sguardo rivolto verso Soverato e se, anche solo per un attimo, lo spazio interposto fra noi e il corpo centrale della Via Lattea non avesse presentato tutti quegli elementi (umidità, pulviscolo, inquinamento luminoso, atmosfera) che di notte ne rendono difficile il rintracciamento e l’esatta definizione sulla volta celeste. 

La foto originale è stata elaborata digitalmente in modo tale da far meglio risaltare la Galassia eliminando tutti gli elementi disturbanti di cui sopra al fine di ritrarla a circa due ore dal suo sorgere dalla linea dell'orizzonte.
Il corpo celeste più luminoso fra quelli visibili nella metà destra dello scatto è Giove.
